Homily for Wednesday April 6 2022

Mother Theresa reminds us about our duty to speak the truth. She says, “Jesus said, ‘I am the truth,’ and it is your duty and mine to speak the truth. Then it is up to the person who hears it whether to accept or reject it.” A religious leader in Abuja, the political capital of Nigeria was suspended from preaching by a committee because he spoke truth to power. He was penalised for criticizing the government’s failure to defend vulnerable citizens. He challenged politicians who go around campaigning for votes before an election and who later become insensitive to the needs of the electorates. The powerful people who suspended him tagged his message as anti-government and inciting. Many preachers, social critics, and public commentators suffer and are punished silently and openly for speaking the truth. A society is doomed when people in authority scuttle the voices of truth and persecute the just. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into the burning furnace because they chose to serve the true God instead of the false god which King Nebuchadnezzar imposed on the people. Also, Jesus was constantly attacked by the religious authority of his time because he told them some hard truths. He said to his listeners, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free.” Are we people who cherish, speak and accept the truth?
