EASTER  TUESDAY HOMILY — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “I HAVE SEEN THE LORD…”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Acts 2:36-41, Psalm 33, John 20:11-18

Peter’s witness on the import of the resurrection continues. “God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” He then proposes the proper response to this mighty work of God: repent, be baptized and embrace the Holy Spirit.

Mary Magdalene’s reaction on seeing the risen Jesus is instructive: she clung to him. She was right to do that considering that she just found her precious Lord, whom she thought that she had lost forever. Instead of being simply possessive of her precious find that she did not want to lose again, the Lord advised her to disengage (only physically) for one purpose: MISSION. She is sent out as the apostle of the resurrection to fellow disciples. Her witness was simple. “I have seen the Lord.” What is left is how each person who hears this witness reacts to it. We either follow her to the “garden,” so we may also see and believe or remain in doubt and unbelief. Once we have encountered the risen Lord, we too must become missionaries of the good news of the resurrection. We cannot selfishly hold on to the joy and light that we have found. We must let others know by our words and actions that we too have seen the Lord. We encountered the risen Jesus in baptism and encounter him anew and repeatedly in the Eucharist, in the community of prayer, and in personal meditation and prayer. These encounters must bear good fruits that bring God’s love, joy, peace, reconciliation, and Holy Spirit to those around us; our family, church and communities. The victory of Christ over sin, darkness and death must reflect in the virtue, light and life that we infuse into our communities by our words and actions. May Easter joy and peace endure despite the challenges of each day and the temptations of the alternatives.

Lord, renew us by the gift of your Spirit and risen Life. Amen.
