HOMILY FOR MONDAY OCTOBER 31 2022.

* Phil 2: 1 – 4, Lk 14: 12 – 14.

There is this madness that is taking over our society, creating a state of lawlessness and taking us back to the level of existence of the animal kingdom – and this madness is called selfishness. Look at our movements on the roads, especially when there is a little traffic jam, and you will see everybody trying to be selfish; look at our movements in offices like the banks when there is a long queue, distribution of jobs or admission quota in Universities, and you see everybody trying to be selfish; look at our movements during elections into political offices, especially at party primaries, and you will see everybody trying to be selfish; look at our movements during our social celebrations, funerals, weddings, jubilees, etc and you will see everybody trying to be selfish; look at our movements even inside the Church, as people try to struggle for confession lines, for comfortable ecclesiastical offices, parishes and positions and you will see everybody trying to be selfish. Today’s 1st reading warns us that if there will be any participation in the divine fellowship of the Spirit, then we must do nothing from selfishness or conceit but in humility, count others first and self last.

Jesus tells us in today’s gospel that even when we are having our celebrations, we should not invite only our big friends, brothers, kinsmen who will pay us back during their own time but we should be selfless to give freely to the poor and less privileged who will never be able to reciprocate that kindness. We must learn from Christ’s ‘kenosis’ in order to be of one mind with him – who emptied himself taking the form of a servant. The Nigerian socio – political arena looks to me like one of the worst jungles I have ever seen in this world; the level of deflections we have witnessed this year from our political parties and level of agitations from labour and other unions are all symptomatic of a selfish and consumerist mentality that has taken over the populace. Among the political gladiators lining up for 2023 elections, there are only very few who have the historical pedigree for selfless leadership, economic management, accountability and selflessness or are these no longer qualities that we need to see in our leaders? Why do people just because of their party affiliations fail to be objective in their judgments? It’s all like a corporate spate of madness. But the Word of God remains loud and clear; We must do nothing from selfishness or conceit. Others must come first and ourselves last!

May God bless you today!
