It is in the nature of kingdoms of this world to come and go. Great rulers of the world often forget that one day their kingdom will. In Zimbabwe of yesterday, it was the kingdom of Robert Mugabe. In Nigeria of yesterday, it was the kingdom of Babangida, Abacha, Obasanjo and Goodluck. Today, it is the kingdom of Buhari. In today’s 1st reading, God wanted Nebukadnezzer to know that his kingdom, no matter how precious to him, will one day be destroyed. His dream of great images of gold, silver, bronze and clay all together broken by a piece of stone was well interpreted by Daniel, the young man of God.
In the gospel, the glory of the Israelites was exaggerated in their image of the temple. Jesus had to remind them that the days will come when there shall be no stone left upon another on that temple. But there is only one kingdom that will endure for ever – the kingdom established by Christ. That is what we celebrated yesterday in the feast of Christ the King. We need to identify ourselves with his values; the values of humility, honesty, detachment and chastity. My pain today as I watch the way Christianity is going in Nigeria is that the noise of Christianity is getting more provocative to unbelievers than ideologically attractive. Christianity is gradually beginning to look like a rolling stone that is gathering no moss. The good news of salvation is gradually being abandoned for the bad news of damnation and curses from evil foundations/ the scourge of enemies; the harsh warning for repentance is gradually being left for the sweet promise of prosperity; the true message of the end time is preached with emphasis on prediction of time and date rather than emphasis on indefinite preparation for the coming of the Master. The summary of our message today is that we should always remember that no condition is permanent. No regime, no kingdom, political or spiritual is permanent. We need to be wiser and more detached from the things of this world and from the kingdoms of this world and concentrate on preparing ourselves for that kingdom that shall never end.
