HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OCTOBER 21 2022.

I recall one of the topics we treated in Geography at St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary, Zaria was the different kinds of clouds. This topic stuck in my memory because of the funny-sounding names of the clouds. We were told that we would be able to forecast the weather if we can read these clouds accurately. The clouds were grouped into ten types the first three are cumulus, stratus, and stratocumulus, which are low-level clouds; the middle level clouds consist of another three types altocumulus, nimbostratus, altostratus; and the other three are the high-level clouds which include cirrus, cirrocumulus, and cirrostratus; finally, the Cumulonimbus, which cuts across the low, middle and high atmosphere. It is good to understand nature and to appreciate the work of God. However, Jesus challenges us to go beyond nature into interpreting the spiritual and moral condition of the time in which we live. He says, “You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky; but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?” (Luke 12:56). It makes little sense if we could predict the climate when we are numb, blind, complacent, and insensitive to the messianic age and the presence of God among us. If we pay attention to geography, weather, and natural sciences, should we not make effort to discern the moral and spiritual signs of the time in which we live?

LUKE 12:54-59
