HOMILY FOR MONDAY SEPTEMBER 12 2022

A Roman Centurion sent elders of the Jews to ask Jesus to heal his paralysed and distressed servant. When Jesus was on his way to the centurion’s house, the centurion sent friends to Jesus, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof” (Luke 7:6). The centurion begged for help without allowing his exalted position to overwhelm him; He was indeed a humble man. Wise people say, the clothing of humility never goes out of style. He also had a strong faith in Jesus and believed in the power of God to heal from a distance: “Only say the word, and my servant will be healed. furthermore, neither showed a sense of entitlement or worthiness to have Jesus come to his house. A story is told about a conversation between a candidate who was to be ordained and the Bishop who was to ordain him. The candidate said, “Bishop if you knew how unworthy I am to be ordained by you, you would never lay hands on me.” The humble bishop replied, “If you knew how unworthy I am, you wouldn’t let me do it!” No one is worthy to receive the grace, healing, mercy, and blessings of God. None is entitled to all these. The centurion knew that so well. Can we imitate such qualitative faith, exceptional humility, and loving care of the centurion?
