HOMILY FOR SATURDAY AUGUST 27 2022

In the Parable of the Talents Jesus narrates a story of a master who summoned his servants and gave five talents of gold to one, then two to another, and three to the third. After some time, he called the three servants to give an account of their stewardship. The person with five talents was enterprising as he gained five more gold. The person with two talents was industrious and came back with a profit of two more gold. The third servant buried his talent in the ground for fear of taking risks. This servant was ignorant of an adage that says it is better to try and fail, than not to try at all. The master described this servant as wicked and worthless. At the end of the parable, Jesus makes a statement that is loaded with deep meaning, “For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have in abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.” In other words, those who use their talents will continue to improve and be prosperous, but those who do not use even the little talents they have will lose them. The great scientist Albert Einstein says, “Genius is 1% talent and 99% percent hard work…” Have we discovered our talents? How well are we putting these talents at the service of humanity and for the glory of God?
