HOMILY FOR SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 10 2022.

Jesus emphatically says, “We know a tree by the kind of fruits it produces” (Luke 6:44). Just as a good tree is known by its good fruits so a good heart is known through the utterances of the tongue, through a set of good behaviours and positive attitudes of love. There is a connection between a healthy heart and a healthy life. Jesus says from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A tree can only bear good fruit when it is well nourished. Similarly, a disciple of Christ can only bear good fruit when he listens to the word and acts upon it. Jesus says, everyone who listens to his words and translates the words into his daily action will produce good fruit. The fruits that good hearts produce are the fruits of the Spirit: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, long-suffering, humility or gentleness, fidelity or faithfulness, modesty, continence or self-control, and chastity. The fruits, which come out of a bad heart are fruits of the flesh: pride, stealing, lust, lying, cheating, gossiping, slandering, gluttony and idolatry. An uncircumcised heart only produces bad fruits, which are manifested in words and actions. According to St. Basil, “A tree is known by its fruit; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love.” What fruits are we producing that are of benefit to the community?
