HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OCTOBER 8 2022

It is common to see people praise the parents who nurtured great people. While Jesus was speaking, a woman in the crowd exclaimed, “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that you sucked. But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” (Luke 11:27-28). Jesus did not mean to water down the statement of the woman but wished to reveal that true happiness and blessedness lie in listening to the word of God and implementing it in our daily lives. Thus, the most blessed person is one who listens and keeps the word of God.

Not many people can listen attentively and act effectively. Besides, active contemplatives are in short supply and so the world needs thinkers as much as it needs doers, human society hunger for those who reflect deeply and act graciously.

Both listening and doing are not easy because one has to listen attentively with the heart to be an effective doer. Jesus commends and blesses both listeners and doers of the Word of God. Our vocation is not only to listen to the word of God but to ponder on it and practice it. We are called to listen, believe and obey the word. Do we consider ourselves to be true disciples of the word of God?
