HOMILY FOR SATURDAY MAY 7 2022

We live in an age of cultural and religious pluralism, where cultures, religions, denominations, and sects are increasing by the day. Therefore, every day we face the challenge of making short- term and long-term decisions and choices. After Jesus taught his followers about the Bread of Life, many of them left him because the teaching was too hard and unacceptable to them. At that moment, Jesus turned to his disciples to ask: “What about you, do you want to go away too?” (John 6:67). He wanted them to decide freely if they wanted to remain with him. Peter answered: “Lord, to whom shall we go?You have the message of eternal life” John 6:68). There are times and situations where it is easy and convenient to follow and come close to Jesus; conversely, there are difficult circumstances when following Jesus appears to be demanding and cumbersome. In those moments we want to walk away from him. Jesus loves and blesses followers who remain loyal to him in every circumstance. Peter and the rest of the disciples held on to Jesus, even when he was deserted by the crowd. Surely, there are gospel messages that are inconvenient and hard to accept. These include teachings on the sanctity of life, love, sex, and marriage. In these modern ages, we are easily deceived by popular opinion. How loyal are we in following Jesus through thick and thin?

Acts of the Apostles 9:31-42; John 6:60-69; Saturday, 3rd Week of Easter
