Homily for Saturday February 26 2022

A Sudanese proverb says, ‘We desire to bequeath two things to our children; the first one is roots, the other one is wings’. We may add, a third thing to bequeath to children is a blessing. Recall how Joseph brought his children E’phraim and Manas’seh to his father Israel (Jacob) for blessing. Israel laid his hands upon the children and blessed them with these words: “The God before whom my fathers, Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has led me all my life long to this day, the angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and in them let my name be perpetuated, and the name of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth” (Genesis 48:15-16). People were bringing little children to Jesus that he might touch (bless) them and his disciples rebuked them. Jesus was indignant and said to his disciples: “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God” (Mark 10:14). Jesus imparted his blessings upon the children. His action shows He is truly a friend of children. Furthermore, His action teaches ministers, parents, teachers, and leaders to pay attention to little ones, especially children, the vulnerable, the unimportant, and those who are pushed away to the fringes of society. Are we also friends of children and the downtrodden of society?

Mark 10:13-16; Saturday, 7th Week
