HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OCTOBER 18 2022

Luke the Evangelist was born in Antioch, which is in modern-day Turkey. He was a companion of the Apostle Paul and during persecution, Paul testified, “Only Luke is with me” (2 Timothy 4:11). Paul calls Luke the beloved physician (Colossians 4:14). His Gospel tells the story of Jesus and in Acts of the Apostles he tells the story of the early Church. His Gospel accurately presents Christ as a gentle and compassionate saviour who cares for the poor, the downtrodden, and sinners. Examples are the parables of ‘The Good Samaritan’ (Luke 10:29-37) and ‘The Prodigal Son’ (Luke 15:11-42). As a consummate scholar, Luke accurately mentions the purpose for which he wrote and the source from which he derived his material. He says, “Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things which have been accomplished among us, just as they were delivered to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may know the truth concerning the things of which you have been informed” (Luke 1:1-4). The Evangelist Luke passionately spread the good news and expressed concern for the poor, sinners, and outcasts. We can imitate the passion, compassion, and writing style of Luke, can’t we?
