HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OCTOBER 20 2022.

Jesus makes a strong, shocking statement when he says: Do you think I have come to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” Oppositions and division are common within families and in communities. Naturally, when we embrace a new set of values, we come across people whose values are diametrically opposed to ours. Consequently, there is a clash of values. leading to division and opposition. Should we be worried when we face all kinds of oppositions for the sake of truth? No. We should rather be more worried and disturbed if everyone sings our praises. Furthermore, Jesus declares: “I have come to bring fire to the earth…” This fire is the fire of the Holy Spirit and the light of grace; It is the fire that sets cold and lukewarm hearts on fire; a fire that purifies and a fire that shines in the dark; It is the fire of the word of God that burns like a torch (Sir 48:1; cf. 1 Kings 18:38-39; Luke 24:32); 4.). Francis Cardinal Arinze says: “You cannot inspire unless you are on fire.” The scripture warns those who are lukewarm saying, “Because you are lukewarm, neither hot or cold. I am going to spit you out” (Revelation 3:16). Is the fire of the Holy Spirit burning in our hearts? Are we still on fire with passion for justice, truth and love?
