HOMILY FOR TUESDAY AUGUST 9 2022

Mother Theresa observes, “So often people say that we should look to the elderly, learn from their wisdom, their many years. I disagree, I say we should look to the young: untarnished, without stereotypes implanted in their minds, no poison, no hatred in their hearts. When we learn to see life through the eyes of a child, that is when we become truly wise.” Jesus Christ is the greatest example of humility and he taught his disciples how to be humble. He said to them, “The greatest among you must be the servant.” He also says, “Anyone who humbles himself will be exalted and the one who exalts himself will be humbled.” In addition, he instructs his listeners to imitate the humility, simplicity, trust, spontaneity, happiness, innocence, and dependence of little children. He says, “Truly, I say to you unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3). An Indian sage says, “The innocence of children is their wisdom, the simplicity of children is their egolessness. The freshness of the child is the freshness of your consciousness, which never becomes old, which always remains young.” Besides, as little children, we are also like sheep that go astray and with love, Jesus searches for us and brings us back to the fold. Do we imitate Jesus by patiently, and lovingly searching for those who stray and bringing them back to the fold?
