FRIDAY HOMILY; 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

By: Fr. Gerald M. Musa

THEME: TRUTH IN LOVE

SIGNS OF THE TIMES

Luke 12:54-59

The proverb which says, “Read the writing on the wall,” encourages people to pay attention to the signs and signals that indicate a change or an impending event. George Orwell’ s classic novel titled “1984” which was published in 1949 is a wake-up call to readers and indeed to all of us to read the signs of our own times.

In the book, the government is represented as a big brother that monitors every move of its citizens especially in an age of digital technology with social media, CCTV cameras, and data tracking. The novel also identifies manipulation of information, altering facts, and fake news as signs of the times in the digital era. Therefore, the book calls on readers to be vigilant and think critically. Jesus challenges his listeners to go beyond nature to interpret the spiritual and moral condition of the time in which we live.

He says, “You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky; but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?” (Luke 12:56). It makes little sense if we could predict the climate when we are numb, blind, complacent, and insensitive to the messianic age and the presence of God among us.

If we pay attention to geography, weather, and natural sciences, should we not make an effort to discern the moral and spiritual signs of the time in which we live?
