FRIDAY HOMILY: 5TH DAY OF OCTATVE CHRISTMAS [YEAR B] – Memorial of Saint Thomas Becket

THEME: The Cost of Discipleship

BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa

Today, we celebrate the feast day of Saint Thomas Becket, a bishop and martyr who gave his life for the sake of the Gospel.

Thomas Becket was a close friend of King Henry II, but when he was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, he became a fierce defender of the Church’s rights and liberties.

He famously said, “I am ready to die for my Lord, that in my blood the Church may obtain liberty and peace.”

And indeed, he was brutally murdered in Canterbury Cathedral on December 29, 1170, by knights who believed they were carrying out the king’s wishes.

Saint Thomas Becket’s story is a powerful reminder of the cost of discipleship. He knew that standing up for his faith and for the Church would come at a great personal cost, but he was willing to pay that price.

As we reflect on his life and legacy, let us ask ourselves: Are we willing to stand up for our faith, even when it is unpopular or difficult? Are we willing to defend the rights and liberties of the Church, even when it means facing opposition or persecution?

May Saint Thomas Becket’s example inspire us to be courageous and steadfast in our faith, and may his sacrifice continue to inspire us to work for the greater glory of God. Amen.
