HOMILY:

(Lk. 12:54-59) Friday of the Twenty Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel Jesus addressed the hypocrisy of the people by pointing out to them their expertise in reading the signs of nature like rain through the clouds and heat through the winds. But when it comes to life situations, they seem to fail to know the consequences.

Nature is nature. While the world is facing a climate change, climate still runs its course. Climate change just made it worse.

But not in human situations. And this is the point of the Lord Jesus. Human beings have the capacity to affect results. He urges forgiveness and reconciliation in times of conflicts and divisions. Why suffer the consequences of war, quarrels, disputes, and court cases? Why not settle the matter amicably? Others even go as far as destroying each other’s reputation. In the end, what they get is not worth what they went through. It was not only foolish. It was painful and destructive.

This is easier said than done. But when we come to think about it, it is not only logical but also Christian. In the Beatitudes, Jesus said that blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God. Peacemakers are who we should be. We do not only aspire for peace but be agents of it. We may not change the world but we can change our little corner in this world. If we take care that our person and those we encounter will be at peace, we maybe starting a good fire which may set the whole world on fire.

This is done not by our own effort. St. Paul realised it in the first reading today. He saw the seeming futility of the human situation with respect to sin. We know what is good yet we do not do it. We know what is sinful yet we do it.

Who can save us from this predicament?, St. Paul asked. The Holy Spirit! It is the Spirit who will inspire us to forgive, be patient, understand, and be peacemakers. The Spirit will enkindle the world with God’s love through peace loving and peacemakers Christians.
