HOMILY 18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: GOD PROVIDES ALL OUR NEEDS

This Sunday is the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In one way or another, all of today’s Scripture Readings emphasize the provident goodness of God, who feeds all of creation and satisfies the desire of every living creature.
St. Paul speaks in a different way about the same dependence of the human spirit on God: as we depend on food for bodily nourishment. The experience of God’s love is so great that nothing (except our deviating will) is capable of displacing it, not even “anguish or distress, or persecution or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword” (v.35). St. Paul says that not even death itself can dim the light of God’s love.

Hunger for food is not the only hunger to be filled, there is a deeper kind of hunger in people and it is a hunger for love, concern and compassion. When you go to a shopping mall and look at the shapes of the people there, you will see that many of us are overfed… but with the wrong food, unhealthy food. Yet there is a hidden hunger– a hunger for acceptance, a hunger for respect, for love, and for lives that matter, and not finding it, many would drown their sorrowful loneliness in alcohol booze, small talk, and superficial distractions.
Too often today our ‘needs’ are tied up in things that are excesses or unnecessary to a simple way of life. “Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread and labour for that which does not satisfy…?” (Isaiah 55:2)
Despite our ignorance, pursuing food and drinks that do not give life, Jesus still has compassion on the hungry and he still says to his Church- You and me: “Give them something to eat.” How easy it is for us to send people away, to make excuses, to say we lack sufficient resources. Jesus asks that we give Him all that we have and let Him use it as He sees fit.
When we give Christ what we have, we never lose. We always end up having immeasurably more than we can imagine or even think about. But it takes trust to surrender all we have. Don’t lack this trust, for God’s promises never fail.
