HOMILY 18TH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “THE HAND OF THE LORD FEEDS US; HE ANSWERS ALL OUR NEEDS.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Matt. 14:13-21

Today’s liturgy celebrates God’s loving kindness and compassion, and His free and abundant provision for His people, materially and spiritually. God invites us to come closer for the satisfaction of our thirst and hunger, freely and superfluously. That superfluity is reflected in Jesus’ unsolicited and empathy-driven provision for the ailing crowd. He immediately cared for them, healing them and providing food for them out of the little that the disciples offered (five loaves and two fish for 5000). In this miracle, we already see Jesus’ gift of himself to us as the bread of life and food for the journey.

At every Eucharist, we respond to God’s invitation to come and be fed anew. Having been fed, we must in turn provide and become nourishment for others. Jesus will increase the little we offer for the daily needs of those around us. As Eucharistic people, we must allow ourselves to be broken and shared for the nourishment of others, especially, the poor and the helpless, through selfless service. In the communion of being broken with Christ, we experience the truth that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. It is that love that must propel us with genuine and pragmatic concern for the plight of the many hungry, starving and homeless in our world. Some are within our vicinity. Others are far removed. In a world where there is so much abundance and waste, there is no genuine explanation for the wide disparity between the haves and have nots, and definitely no reason for our fellow human beings to die of hunger and starvation. Let us support and vote for policies and policy makers that/who would care for the marginalized. Let us also share, because one less hungry person at a time and all will be fed.

Lord, hear the cry of the poor, hungry and homeless. Amen.
