HOMILY THEME: FORGIVE AS MANY AS SEVENTY-SEVEN TIMES

BY: Fr. Cosmas Ukadike

HOMILY: The passion for revenge can block us from receiving God’s mercy, this is because there’s no way we can harbour anger against someone and expect healing from the Lord (Sirach 28, 3). When the Lord demands us to forgive the one who offends us as many as 77 times, he’s simply saying that there should be no limit to our forgiveness. The Lord wants us to take after him in this regard by overlooking faults as he does (Sirach 28, 7). And the book of the Psalms emphatically stressed: “if the Lord should mark our gilt, who would survive?” (130, 3). Forgiving others wins us the grace of divine mercy: “for in forgiving a neighbour the wrong he has done, then your sins will be pardoned when you pray (Sirach 28, 2).

The Lord desires that we live in peace and harmony with one another and there’s no better way to go about this other than by setting aside enmity and dropping every charges we‘ve got against our brother/sister.

For the harshness of the unforgiving debtor bounced back on him as Jesus pointed to us in today’s Gospel reading. God like the king in the gospel out of mercy forgives us again and again our huge debt especially when we cry unto him, but we forget so easily the mercy of God which we enjoy, and insist on dealing decisively on our neighbour whom we could comfortably pardon for his offence.

We pray today that the spirit of forgiveness and mercy may envelop us so that we may forgive our offenders not just so that we may obtain mercy in return, but as an expression of God’s love which we have been called to live. Have a blessed day.
