HOMILY FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT YEAR B.

 THEME: PREPARE HIS WAYS

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Mk. 1:1-8)
In the day’s Gospel we have the appearance of St. John the Baptist, the precursor of Jesus. As proclaimed by his father Zechariah in his canticle, “And you, my child, will be the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare His ways,…” John will appear ahead of Jesus for the purpose of inviting people to repentance. In the process, people will benefit from the salvation brought by Jesus. John played his role to the full.

John was admirable in many ways. He came living a simple life. His clothes were camel’s hair and a leather belt. He lived in the wilderness and satisfied himself with what the wilderness would offer like honey and locusts. He was outspoken and let his voice be heard by everyone, from the lowly to the powerful and authorities. He was openly preaching surrounded by his disciples. He was also brave and fearless. Herod, the king, was not spared. He revealed his immoral relations with the wife of his brother.

Unfortunately, for John, it caused his death. But even the threat of suffering and death did not deter him from proclaiming the truth and fulfilling his role. But there is one thing which makes St. John a good prophet and perfect precursor. His humility.

There was a moment when St. John became so popular to the people. He was even mistaken to be a Messiah. But he would not be tempted. He said, “ One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of His sandals.” The messiah, Jesus Christ, John knew, was way beyond his league. In other words, John knew his place in the plan of God. He must set the stage where Jesus will fulfil His own mission of salvation. He did it perfectly. His humility entailed bearing and living the truth. The Truth came and those who heeded John embraced Him. “John also said, “He must increase, I must decrease.”

How many people, servants, even ministers who had abandoned their roles just because they had become popular as a preacher, healer, presider, counsellor, etc. Many had mistaken people’s admiration, patronage, and following as directed to them. The true minister is the one who never forgets he or she is a representative of Christ. It is Christ who is the Word which gives eternal life, the great healer of body and soul, and the one who died on the cross and saved us. We all ought to follow John’s example. This second Sunday of Advent, we must be aware of the role God had given us in relation to His Son our Lord Jesus Christ.
