Wisdom 6:12-16;
1Thessalonians 4:13-18;
Matthew 25:1-13

Some things cannot be shared, each one has to possess it by himself. One of those things is being wise, knowledge, and what is called common sense. If one doesn’t have it, there is no way out or substitute for it.

When one doesn’t know something, he doesn’t know it unless he is being taught. There is a saying in Yoruba that “ogbon ju agbara- wisdom is more than power”. Our readings today emphasise on the importance of wisdom in Christian living. In the gospel reading, there is a contrast between the wise Virgins and the foolish Virgins. The wise Virgins were fully prepared, well equipped with enough oil. They had foresight that the foolish ones doesn’t possess. The foolish ones could only see their immediate. They were the ephemeral people that deal with the here and now. They had no spiritual understanding about anything and they missed out. This kind of spiritual understanding about life, things is what St. Paul want us to have in the second reading of today about death, judgment and resurrection.

Spiritual understanding means hope exists in us. Our first reading want all of us to seek for this kind of spiritual understanding about life. There is an assurance that this understanding and wisdom is close to all those who seek her and desire to have her.

My dear friends, the difference between the wise and the foolish is that the wise doesn’t see things with the naked eyes. They see things with an inner mind, think deeply and they act like the true philosophers of old who considers the historical antecedent of things, the present and the future consequences of things before taking a final decision. Our problems today is simply because we don’t think anymore. We just act as if we don’t have the human faculty to think. We respond more to emotions and pass through life without allowing life to question us. We are challenged today to seek for wisdom which is a spiritual understanding of life by seeing things that may not be immediately seen but revealed by God. May the Lord give us the wisdom from above. Amen.
