HOMILY FOR THE 34TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A.

THEME: SOLEMNITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST KING OF THE UNIVERSE

It is being said that every society deserves it’s leader. This is so because the leader is reflected in the followers and the followers is reflected in the leader. Yoruba will say “obe ti baale ile o ki n je, iyale ile o ki n se”- The soup that the Father of the house doesn’t eat, the woman in the house doesn’t cook it. This means that everything must revolve round the leader and the way the followers behave must be a reflection of the behaviour of their leader. It was John Maxwell who define Leadership as influence, nothing more, nothing less. A leader influences everyday living from the way the followers walk to the way they talk to the way they stand.

Today as we celebrate the feast of Christ the King, we are being invited by our readings to be part of God’s community where Christ is the leader himself and everything revolves round him.

There is no disconnectedness between him and his followers. That is why in the first reading, he said he will by himself lead his flock. He will monitor their progress by himself so that everything about them can be according to how he wants it. In the second reading, St. Paul tells us that he, Christ is the first-fruits of all. Hence, all men shall through him be made alive. He is not going to be alive and others dead. No, since he is alive, all must be alive as well. What a deep connectivity. This same connection is what our gospel reading is talking about. Those who belong to him shall do things that peculiar to him and for him. Those who belong to him are also him as well, there is no disconnection. Whatever is being done to any person created in the image of God especially the poor, the needy and the less privileged, you have already done it to him because all belong to the one and same community.

My dear friends, which community do you belong? Is the community of God’s people? The community of God’s people is a community of those who are his friends, who does his will and most importantly, those who are merciful as the heavenly Father is merciful.

Again, we must start seeing everyone we meet as members of the same community of God. There is no discrimination for everyone we see is important.

Again, we must realize that in this community, every thing is important and vital. The feeding, the drinking, the clothes we wear etc all these things are to be noted by the master. We cannot afford to separate the everyday living from the extraordinary acts. The saints are those who do Ordinary things in a special way. Let us remain within the fold of God’s care and realize that we can only enjoy his goodness if we remain attached and connected to him in all areas of our lives. May Christ the Merciful King continue to care for us. Amen.
