HOMILY: 4TH SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: GOD NEVER ABANDONS US

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Jn. 3:14-21)
Fourth Sunday of Lent, Laetare Sunday (Day 26 of Lent)

In the day’s Gospel Jesus assures Nicodemus and us that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son for our salvation. This is very timely given the situation we are already in the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Today is called Laetare Sunday, similar to Gaudete Sunday during the Season of Advent. It is a time to rejoice. Rejoice here is not at the same level and meaning with the joy of Easter. It is a time of repose. We still maintain the spirit of Lent but we take a breather in order to spiritually and physically strengthen and revitalize ourselves for the crucial and critical ultimate week of Lent and the Holy Week proper. Thus, the theme in our readings is one of assurance.

The faithful is being given a pat on the back today. The first reading reveals that God is aware of the fate of His faithful. They will be tempted, rejected and persecuted. But God is there. He never abandons us. In the second reading, Paul, assures his community of the abundance of God’s mercy and love. It is a consistent love. And the Gospel confirms this unconditional love which we at times fail to appreciate and, worse, forget. Having a God who had offered His Son to be ultimately humble and even die for His people unconditionally, is the ultimate act of love unfathomed by the human heart and mind.

Let us rejoice to the everyday victories of faith. Let those victories further strengthen us and cement our feet on the foundation of God. It may not be the end yet, but we are ready. Let us inspire each other in faith. There are many today who are weak, frustrated and desperate. Evil seems to be getting the upper hand in the battle for souls. But we must not forget that evil is no match to God. Only when we allow it to dominate will they prevail. But with allegiance to God, to curse darkness and enter into the light, we will prevail and survive the onslaught of sin. Love conquers all, including sin.
