HOMILY FOR THE FEAST OF THE GUARDIAN ANGELS.

HOMILY THEME: YOU NEVER WALK ALONE

BY: Fr. Evaristus Abu

HOMILY:
Today, we celebrate our Guardian Angels who we read about in Psalm 91:11-12. “For he will give his angels charge of you to guard you in ALL your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.”

In the book of Exodus, we read: “Behold, I send an angel before you, to GUARD you on the way and to bring you to the place which I have prepared.” Ex.23:20.

Our Guardian Angels offer us divine protection. They fight on our behalf even without us knowing. They are God’s messengers of defence against evil spirits and at times, they act as our conscience preventing us from taking wrong decisions.

Concerning the Guardian Angel, God says: “Give heed to him and hearken to his voice, do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression; for my name is in him. If you hearken attentively to his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.” Exodus 23:21-22.

It is funny how people go to the devil for protection just because they are ignorant of the existence of Guardian Angels freely provided by God for his children. What a shame!

Our first reading today tells us that God is jealous. God’s jealousy for us Christians is not like human jealously; it is a jealousy that claims us entirely for God. No wonder St. Augustine rightly asserted: “Our hearts are restless, until they rest in you, O Lord.” The existence of Guardian Angels are clear proof of God’s jealousy for us.

As you leave your house today, just bear in mind that you are never alone, there are invisible spirits about you sent by God to protect and guide you. You should never allow fear cripple you at any point in time.

Our guardian angels help to remind us of the need for us to always have a childlike attitude and humble ourselves as Jesus explains in our Gospel passage that the least among them is the one who is great.

Let us pray: Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God commits me here, ever this day be at my side to guide and guard me. Amen.

Be Happy. Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. God bless you. (Monday of the 26th Week in Ordinary Time. Bible Study: Zechariah 8:1-8 and Luke 9:46-50)
