HOMILY FOR THE 5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

THEME: DO YOU SEEK JESUS FOR YOUR HEALING?

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Mk. 1:29-39)
In the day’s Gospel, the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we have Jesus curing the sick. As a result, people were seeking Him for healing. After a brief rest, instead of attending to those who were waiting to be healed, He left them and proceeded to the neighbouring place to preach.

For if He stayed, a day would not be enough to spend for healing. It will be all He would do. While healing is part of Jesus’ teaching, this time, Jesus opted to directly teach than fulfill it by healing the sick. And we ask why? The reason is that the people stopped at the healing of the body. The spiritual conversion needed as a consequence of the physical healing did not follow. Jesus must have noticed that many had come only to be healed physically. The people were missing the essence of His healing. Jesus knew His mission. He was focused to it. Thus, He decided to, instead, preach to the next town.

We must also ask ourselves. Who is Jesus to us? If we ask Him for graces, what is our purpose? Is He only a provider? Is He only a miracle worker? Or He is our Lord and Saviour? There is nothing wrong with asking for healing or material graces. If they are given, thanks be to God. But we should not forget the very reason why Jesus came. We should not also forget who God is to us. Jesus came to save. He used healing and preaching and miracles to proclaim His authority and His mission. As focus as He was in His mission, we must also be focused with our own Mission and destiny.

The mystery of Jesus and His words and works find their key in salvation. He came to save. Let us see Him as a saviour. Let us see Him as one who came to free us from our sins and help us avoid them. Jesus is a saviour not only a provider.
