HOMILY FOR 11TH THURSDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name…”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

2 Cor 11:1-11; Psalm 111:1-4, 7-8; Matt 6:7-15

In their many prayerful moments together, Jesus may have taught his disciples many prayers, in addition to urging them to pray always and teaching them how to pray. But the Lord’s Prayer was probably the most memorable and the only one preserved in Scripture. The Church teaches us that it is the pattern of all prayer. Also, it counts on trust and intimacy with a loving God, who is “Our Father.”

In it, we approach God as our loving Father; to praise Him and bless Him, to pledge their loyalty, and to offer supplications for our needs and seek protection from the evil one. The promise to treat others as God treats us in the petition for forgiveness is binding on all. Hence, the reminder in Matt 6:15 and 18:35 that failure to follow up that promise with action disrupts God’s offer of forgiveness to us. The ministry of forgiveness and reconciliation opens the way to God’s heart to us. The Lord’s Prayer should be on our lips and minds constantly, as Church and as individuals. We must pray it fervently and devotedly, not haphazardly, like many do; and we should make it a constant subject matter for reflection. And as Church, we must heed Paul’s warning today to be wary of corrupting elements and teachings, and to stick to the Truth of the Gospel.

Our Father, please give us each day our daily bread; forgive us our sins and deliver us from every evil. Amen.
