HOMILY FOR 18TH MONDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Num 11:4b-15; Psalm 81:13-17; Matt 14:13-21

Some can choose the kind of food they want to eat. Our children complain they won’t eat food A or B, or they have had too much of C. Yet, many others have no food at all; they have not eaten today, or do not know where their next meal would come from. Both scenarios present themselves in today’s readings. Both scenarios also manifest in our midst today in many parts of the world.

We must remain thankful for what we have, no matter how insignificant we think it is. Thank the provider first and foremost; Count your blessings. In today’s gospel, Jesus invites us to join him in feeding the poor. Like his disciples, we sometimes make excuses, claiming not to have enough resources or time. Jesus insists that we bring what we have, and he would make it sufficient for all. He tells us: “give them some food yourselves;” take responsibility for the pain, distress and hunger of those around you. Make time for the service of the poor. The joys and sadness etc. of the world are ours as well (Gaudium et Spes 1). We need the courage of the Widow of Zarephath (1 Kgs 17:8-24) and the Widow with the mite in Mark 11:41-44, and we would come to know how much more blessed it is to give and share. Please give and share a moment of prayer for your priests and bishops as we celebrate St. John Mary Vianney today, so that, like him, they may be faithful to their vocations and to the committed service of the flock entrusted to their care. St. John Mary Vianney, patron of priests; please pray for all our priests and bishops, that they like you may spend their entire lives in faithful service of the flock of Christ.

Lord, teach us compassion and generosity; heal our insensitivity and indifference. Amen.
