HOMILY FOR 19TH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: COURAGE! IT IS I! DO NOT BE AFRAID!

1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a; Romans 9:1-5; Matthew 14:22-33
Today, we are reminded of God´s ever abiding presence with us, especially in moments of turbulence.
Fleeing from the threat of persecution, Elijah´s encounter with God in the gentle breeze at mount Horeb gave him sufficient strength and courage to return to his mission despite the impending threat to his life.
In his epistle to the Romans, St. Paul expresses his strong desire for all God´s children (especially the Israelites) to encounter Christ and to partake in the salvation he offers us gratuitously.
In the gospel, Jesus encounters his disciples in their moments of turbulence and despair. His encouraging words “Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid!” reignited the faith and hope of the disciples and gave Peter the courage to walk on the lake with him. Also, the presence of Jesus calmed the storm and restored calm for the disciples.

Beloved in Christ, the noise of the turbulence we experience in life are often too loud that we most times forget that God is always with us to help us and to walk with us. When we face challenging situations, we often do so with despair and lack of trust in God.
Today, God assures us of his ever-abiding presence. Both in challenging times and in times of tranquility, he is for us a refuge and shield. Unlike Peter, our approach to turbulent situations and moments should not be with fear. Rather, we should face them with confidence and assurance that God always accompanies at such moments and that like Elijah, we can only persevere in such moments through the grace of God and through the strength that he grants us.
May God give us the grace to withstand the challenges of life with courage and strength and with the assurance that he never abandons us. As loud as our turbulent moments are, may we remain firm in our faith and hear the voice of God in the whispers of a quiet breeze, encouraging us not to be afraid, and assuring us of his ever-abiding presence at every condition we face in life.
