HOMILY FOR 19TH TUESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: LESSONS FROM A LITTLE CHILD
BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa
In our gospel reading (Matthew 18:1–5, 10, 12–14), Jesus teaches us that humility is essential for entering the kingdom of heaven. He tells us that we must become like little children, who are trusting and dependent on others. This is a challenging message, as we often strive for independence and self-sufficiency.

Alex, a talented young musician, has always dreamed of making it big. He spends hours practicing and perfecting his craft, and eventually he lands a record deal. But as his fame grows, so does his ego. He starts to believe that he’s the reason for his success and that he doesn’t need anyone else’s help.
One day, Alex’s producer suggests that he collaborate with a fellow musician on his next album. Alex is horrified; he doesn’t want to share the spotlight or credit with anyone else. But his producer insists, saying that collaboration will bring a new level of depth and richness to his music.
At first, Alex struggles to let go of his need for control. But as he starts working with his collaborator, he realizes that their combined talents create something truly special. He learns to trust and depend on others, and his music flourishes as a result.
This experience teaches Alex a valuable lesson about humility. He comes to understand that his success isn’t just about him; it’s about the people who support and contribute to his music. And he came to appreciate the words of Jesus: “Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
Alex’s story illustrates the challenge of humility in our lives. Like him, we often struggle to let go of our need for control and recognition. But Jesus reminds us that true strength comes not from ourselves but from God and our willingness to trust and depend on others.
As we reflect on this gospel passage, let us ask ourselves: Am I open to God’s word, even when it challenges me? Do I approach life with humility, recognizing my dependence on God? Or do I try to go it alone, relying on my own strength and wisdom?
Humility is not always easy. It necessitates that we let go of our pride and need for control, like a little child. It requires us to trust in God’s goodness and providence. But when we approach life with humility, we open ourselves up to God’s grace and guidance.
Let us pray for the grace to listen and receive God’s message, even when it’s difficult. May we approach God with humility and trust. And may we always remember that our strength comes from God, not ourselves. Amen.
