HOMILY FOR 1ST FRIDAY OF ADVENT — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: THEIR EYES OPENED.

BY: BISHOP GERALD M. MUSA

MATTHEW 9:27-31

We live in a world where there are various forms of disability. The Punch Newspaper of 29th August 2021 featured the experiences of blind people, who lost their sight in childhood as a result of measles. The newspaper report says measles causes about 60,000 cases of blindness yearly. Furthermore, there are about a million adults who are blind in Nigeria, over 3 million with major eye issues, and 42 out of 1000 Nigerians who are over the age of 40 are blind.

Jesus encountered two blind men who desperately approached him for healing. He touched their eyes and their eyes were opened. We also need Jesus to heal our physical, intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and moral blindness. Intellectual blindness is when we see things and the world only from one faulty and narrow perspective. The Indians say it is better to be blind than to see things from only one point of view and the Arabs say the eyes are of little use if the mind is blind. The blindness of the heart and spiritual blindness are other forms of blindness that make us unable to see the needs of our neighbours. Moral blindness makes it impossible to see our faults, sinfulness, and imperfections. At Christmas, we celebrate Jesus, the light of the world. Should we not approach him, like the blind men, to also open the eyes of our hearts and minds and enlighten us?
