HOMILY FOR 20TH FRIDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart…You must love your neighbor as yourself.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Ezek 37:1-14; Psalm 106(107):2-9; Matt 22:34-40

Jesus summarized all the biblical injunctions in one commandment, love of God and love of neighbor. The gospel tradition has unanimous testimony regarding Jesus’ demand or commandment of love. St. John, however, gives us another dimension when he puts it in the context of direct instructions to Jesus’ disciples in the community discourse and repeated it, not only in the gospel, but also, in his letters.

In addition, Jesus, in John’s gospel, notes that love of neighbor should be after the example he gave to us: in action at the washing of the feet and laying down his life for us on the cross, and by word in the instruction, “love one another as I have loved you.” Such love opens the way to God’s heart and creates an indwelling for God in our lives, hearts and souls, because God is love. That love of neighbor is inseparable from love of God must be taken seriously. Holiness of life is to be found more in the way we relate to others, especially the weak, vulnerable, underprivileged, sick, old, orphaned and widowed than in empty prayers and rituals. Such love is what puts flesh and sinews on our dry bones when our earthly life is ended. Such love breathes eternity into our dead bodies in death, so that we may share life with the God of love eternally. Such love heals, forgives, redeems, nourishes, yields, serves, unites, bridges, reconciles, encourages, strengthens and raises up those who are down. Jesus demands that we all make the sacrifice of that love and our lives, families, churches and world will be better.

Lord, make us instruments of your love and peace. Amen.
