HOMILY FOR 20TH MONDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: TOO MANY POSSESSIONS?

Ezek 24:15-24; Psalm (Deut 32:18-21); Matt 19:16-22
Haven’t we all noticed at some point that those of us who tend to grab continually are also the most selfish? Yes! The same hands that tend to always ‘grab’ will get so used to taking from people that they soon completely forget how to give. The fat bank accounts, the cars, the houses, the chains of businesses… In the end, all is vanity. Make no mistakes about that.

The young man in today’s gospel reading had been keeping God’s commandments. He had in fact done well. But he couldn’t give his material possessions up for the Kingdom because he had too many of them. In other words, he had also gotten too attached to them. Don’t be deceived. The harm is not in acquiring material possessions per se, but in getting too attached. The risk of getting attached comes from acquiring too much. So relax! Life is short. Instead of hoarding possessions, try giving for a change. After all, more blessed is the hand that gives than the one that receives.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of this new day. May I not be too attached to the things of this world to the extent of losing sight of what truly matters, Amen.
