HOMILY FOR 22ND SATURDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “THE SON OF MAN IS MASTER OF THE SABBATH.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

1 Cor 4:6b-15; Psalm 144(145):17-21; Luke 6:1-5

As Jesus continues to respond to the combatant scribes and Pharisees in today’s gospel, he invites all to openness to what God is doing in our lives and to what God is calling us to do and to be. He continues to ask that we prepare to abandon our old ways, in which we have found comfort and security, especially, if they are not virtuous paths that are fair to both God and humanity, and to embrace the spirit of the gospel, in every respect. It is a call to change and transformation.

Change, as we know, is a permanent reality in life. Even when we refuse to change, change still continues to change us. As we do that, we must heed the proverb that you don’t throw out the dirty bath water with the baby. There are many old and traditional values that we have lived by and with, guided by the Holy Spirit and by the Church, that remain valuable for our spiritual, physical and psychological wellbeing even today. Those we must keep. There are, however, others that are obsolete, irrelevant and archaic that we must be willing to archive in order to embrace better ways of living and doing things. That openness is what helps us to embrace whatever God is calling us to be and do in this day and time. In all, whether old or new, we must ensure that it is adopted according to the mind of Christ and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Anything outside that realm is from the evil one. Continuing to encourage us on proper behaviour in the community, St. Paul urges us to shun an undue sense of entitlement, something that breaks down true love and service in communities and families. It is in the loss of such sense of entitlement that we can truly see ourselves as “fools for the sake of Christ” and allow our lives be spent in the service of love, unity, reconciliation, peace and hope, under the one God as our Father.

Merciful Father, you are close to all who call on you, help us to be truly humble and trusting in our prayers; forgive us our sins of entitlement; and grant our humble prayers, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
