HOMILY FOR 23RD FRIDAY ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: THAT WE MAY SEE

BY: Fr. Karabari Paul

Luke 6:39-42

Beloved in Christ, today’s Gospel pierces our hearts with the words of Jesus: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?” This blindness is not simply physical but spiritual—the blindness of pride, greed, hatred, and sin. How often do we see leaders in politics, religion, and society dragging souls into pits of corruption and destruction because their own hearts lack the light of God? Even in families and communities, blind hearts that refuse to see love and forgiveness end up spreading bitterness and pain. The Lord warns us that if we follow the blind, we will share in their downfall, but if we follow Christ—the Light of the world—we will walk safely in truth.

Jesus also teaches: “A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully taught will be like his teacher.” Whoever we follow, we eventually become like. If we follow Christ, we become merciful, humble, forgiving, and holy. But if we follow the proud, the greedy, and the unjust, we inherit their ruin. This Gospel forces us to ask: Who is shaping my life? Who is my teacher—Christ, who saves, or the blind voices of the world, who mislead? The call to discipleship is a call to mirror Christ and no one else.

Our Lord then exposes the hypocrisy in our hearts: “Why do you see the speck in your brother’s eye but do not notice the log in your own?” How easy it is to criticize, condemn, and magnify the faults of others while ignoring the sin that blinds our own souls. We become eager judges, spiritual surgeons trying to fix others, while the tumor of pride, envy, anger, and unforgiveness clouds our own vision. Christ does not shame us with these words—He calls us to healing. He asks us first to remove the log from our eyes through repentance and humility so that, with compassion, we may help our brothers and sisters in their struggles.

Beloved, this Gospel is a mirror to our times. Our world is filled with blindness—blindness of greed, hatred, lust, and corruption. Families are wounded, nations divided, and churches weakened because we refuse to see clearly. Yet Christ has come to open our eyes. If we want to lead, we must first be led by Him; if we want to heal others, we must first be healed by Him. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. Let us pray: “Open my eyes, Lord, that I may see myself as I truly am. Heal me first, that I may bring healing to others.” May we no longer walk in darkness, but in the light of Christ, who alone is Truth, Mercy, and Life. Amen. Good morning.
