HOMILY FOR 23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: OWE NO ONE ANYTHING, EXCEPT TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER.

BY: Fr. Cosmas Ukadike

HOMILY:
God’s word calls us today to pay attention to the love of our neighbour.

This neighbourly love is a flow and an effect of Gods love for us.

St John declared that it is not as though we love God first, no, He loved us first (1Jn 4, 10) and our own love is an appreciation of Gods love. “If I your Lord and master has washed your feet, you also have to go and do the same to others (Jn 13,14 ).

Love is not only seen as a command, but also the summary of all the commandments (Rom 13, 9-20).

The basic teachings of the 10 commandments is to tell us how to love truly and from the heart. It’s about good Christian relationship. This is why God’s word is emphasizing today; “owe no one anything, except the debt of love” (Rom 13, 8). And this debt/duty of love is practiced in various aspects of our relationship with people around us.

One of these ways is highlighed in today’s Gospel as “Fraternal charity” This entails correcting our brothers/sisters in a loving manner, without seeking to humiliate or disgrace them, but to help them realize their faults and put them in the right part in a loving manner.

Jesus took his time to bring out the loving steps that need to be taken in other to correct and reconcile a brother/sister (Mat 18, 15-18). It all boils down to seeking and striving after peace at all cost.

Therefore, one could say that “no sacrifice can be termed “too much for the sake of restoring a brotherly/sisterly love. May God help us to love him and to love one another.

Have a blessed day.
