HOMILY FOR 24TH TUESDAY OF ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: GOD’S COMPASSION & MIGHT

1 Tim 3:1-13; Psalm 100(101):1-3, 5-6; Luke 7:11-17

As we’ve heard time and again, “The deepest wounds are not the ones we get from knives and guns, but the ones we get from losing the ones we love.” Jesus met a widow at Nain who lost her beloved and only son. The world became dark when this woman lost her husband and became a widow. She must have seen a darker future when she lost her only son. Jesus was deeply moved with compassion and said to her, “Do not weep.” Immediately, he commanded the dead young man to rise. “The dead man sat up and began to speak.”

Pope Francis observes that “In the Gospels, Jesus is often moved by compassion. And compassion is also the language of God.” Compassion moved Jesus to demonstrate his power over death for the first time, which affirms his divinity and might. Every day, he gives hope to many people who think that life is unfair to them. In Nigeria, there is a common expression that says “This life no balance,” which means life is so unfair.

The greatest miracle that Jesus performs today is raising those who are spiritually dead, bringing life to lifeless marriages, restoring hope to those who are hopeless, uplifting those who have sunk into depression, and wiping the tears of those who mourn. We can participate in the ministry of Jesus by consoling and comforting people in distress, sorrow, and grief. Like Jesus, can we also accompany our compassion with positive action?
