HOMILY FOR 25TH FRIDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: WHO ARE YOU?
BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa
Mark Twain once said, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” In today’s world, many face an identity crisis, unsure of who they are, their worth, and the purpose for which they were created. Jesus, however, knew His identity and mission on earth. He wanted His disciples to recognize this, so He asked, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” Some answered, “John the Baptist”; others said, “Elijah”; and still others, “one of the ancient prophets has arisen.” But Jesus then asked, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Messiah of God” (Luke 9:18-20).

Jesus’ knowledge of His identity is evident when He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Centuries ago, the philosopher Socrates emphasized the importance of self-awareness, saying, “Know yourself.” St. Theresa of Avila also highlighted the value of self-knowledge, stating, “All our trials and disturbances come from not understanding ourselves.”
The Scriptures remind us of our identity: “We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for good works” (Ephesians 2:10). How much effort do we put into discovering our true identity and purpose through the words of the Scriptures?
