HOMILY FOR 26TH MONDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “NAKED I CAME FROM MY MOTHER’S WOMB, NAKED I SHALL RETURN.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Job 1:6-22; Psalm 16(17):1-3, 6-7; Luke 9:46-50

Confronted by the stark realities of life, resulting from incalculable loss of life and property, Job, in faith, surrendered himself to God’s will, and spent a considerable amount of time battling the powers of evil, in the struggle for the ownership of his soul.

Today’s reading tells us that Job was the victim of the devil’s games, the one who prowls around seeking souls that will betray their faith in God. Job was not privy to the discussion in the heavenly council between God and Satan. He simply trusted that such evil would not happen to him without God knowing it or permitting it and continued to place his trust in God, thus putting Satan to shame; that resistance came at a high price. The devil, even today, is always hanging around God’s children, recruiting agents who would do his will and his evil works, as well as urging rebellion against God and loyalty to himself. The struggle for position that caused the argument among the disciples in the gospel reading was the devil’s seed of discord. Jesus quickly dissipated the argument and the unbridled ambition of those disciples by drawing their attention to what is truly important: humility, simplicity, childlike trust and selfless service. Even when they saw themselves in competition over against others, whom they thought were not of their party and should therefore not be evoking Jesus’ name, Jesus quickly addressed their narrow mindedness and called them to a more inclusive embrace of the gospel. We must not allow envy, jealousy, ambition, competition and resentment destroy our families, churches and communities. Rather, we must be sworn to humility and simplicity of life; we must also be more open-minded in our reception and sharing of the gospel, always remembering the Lord’s injunction that: “anyone who is not against you is for you.”

Lord, lead us not into temptation; delivers us from the evil one. Amen.
