HOMILY FOR 26TH THURSDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “PEACE TO THIS HOUSE”

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

Job 19:21-27, Ps. 27:7-9,13-14, Luke 10:1-12

The message of today’s liturgy highlights that the harvest is the fruition of much labor and growth – beginning with the sowing of seeds, then growth to maturity, and finally the reaping of fruit for the harvest. In like manner, the word of God is sown in the hearts of receptive men and women who hear his word, accept it with trust and obedience, and then share the abundant fruit of God’s word in their life with others.
In the first reading (Job 19: 21-27), after hearing from his friends advising him to curse God for all his misfortune, Job dismisses their notions and professes his trust in God even in the midst of his adversities. Job’s profession of faith in God as his “Vindicator” or “Redeemer” has been seen as a model for Christian believers who know Jesus as the Redeemer.

In the gospel (Luke 10: 1-12), Jesus appoints seventy-two of His disciples and sends them out with the message of peace and the double task of speaking and acting in His Name. “Whatever house you go into, let your first words be, “Peace to this house. ” And if a man of peace is there, your peace will go and rest on him. ”
Dear friends, the Word of God has the power to transform anyone who openly welcomes it. Complete understanding and acceptance of God’s Word/Law produces refreshment for the soul, insight, trustworthiness, and truth, which liberates.
I pray that as we journey in life today, we will not only listen to the transformative Word but be ready to share it with all. Since action speaks louder than voice, may our way of life be a testimony of the Living Word that others will encounter. May the precepts of the Lord gladden our hearts (Ps. 19: 9). Have a joy-full day!
