HOMILY FOR 26TH TUESDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME—YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: OUT OF EGYPT, I CALLED MY SON
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Job 3:1-3,11-17,20-23, Psalm 88:2-8, Luke 9:51-56
It is Nigeria’s Independence Day. Instead of celebrating St. Theresa of the Child Jesus (now celebrated Oct. 3). The Church in Nigeria celebrates this day in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary to whom Nigeria is consecrated with the title of Queen and Patroness. Since it is the first day of October, a month that is also dedicated to Our Lady, such a consecration has become doubly important for Nigerians, as they pray earnestly for their bedeviled and ailing nation, not just on Independence Day but throughout the month and beyond.

We pray that Mother Mary, who gave joy to others by bringing Jesus to them and who rescued the wedding at Cana from the disgrace of a failed party, would bring her Son into our lives anew, so that we may experience all the gifts and blessings associated with the presence of the coming Messiah in today’s first reading. Those blessings include the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as justice and equity, integrity, faithfulness, peace as no one but God could give it, uprightness, the fear of God and restoration. We need all these blessings in Nigeria today more than ever before, against the background of decades of failed leadership, insecurity, violence, poverty despite the plenty with which God blessed the country, destruction of life and property and the absence of basic infrastructural means of meaningful existence. I implore all people of good will worldwide to please join Nigerians in prayer today and throughout this month for the deliverance of this beautiful nation that is blessed with wonderful human and natural resources, amidst great diversity. Pray for the kind of unity that was accomplished by Jesus through his passion and resurrection, as St. Paul reminds us in the second reading. And may not just Nigeria, but the entire African continent that sheltered and gave refuge to the Son of God in time of trouble, become free from of strife, wars, insurrection, insecurity, corruption, poverty and human degradation. May our Lady, Queen, Patroness and Mother of Nigeria, come to her aid and help her efforts to turn her fortunes around.
Our Lady, Queen and Patroness of Nigeria; Pray for us. Amen.
