HOMILY FOR 27TH TUESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: MARTHA AND MARY
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
Gal 1:13-24; Psalm 138(139):1-3, 13-15; Luke 10:38-42
St. Augustine describes God as “Semper agens, semper quietus”—One who is always acting, always at rest. This phrase captures the balance between the active and contemplative aspects of life. In our active lives (semper agens), we engage in daily tasks, fulfill responsibilities, serve others, and strive to make a positive impact on the world. In our contemplative lives (semper quietus), we seek moments of stillness, prayer, meditation, and spiritual growth.

St. Luke tells the story of Martha and Mary, who welcomed Jesus into their home. Fr. Munachi E. Ezeogu explains that this story isn’t about choosing between being a “Martha” or a “Mary.” Rather, it reminds us that a true disciple must embody both qualities—active service and deep contemplation. Jesus highlights that fellowship with the Lord and listening to His word should always come before our work for Him.
This story challenges us to evaluate our spiritual balance. Do our religious activities sometimes overshadow our relationship with God?
