HOMILY FOR 27TH WEDNESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: TEACH US TO PRAY
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
St. Josemaria Escriva, in his book The Way, asks, “You do not know how to pray? Put yourself in the presence of God, and as soon as you have said, ‘Lord, I don’t know how to pray!’ you can be sure you have already begun.” Similarly, the disciples of Jesus requested, “Lord, teach us to pray as John taught his disciples.” It was customary for Rabbis (teachers) to teach their disciples specific prayers, so this request was quite natural. Jesus, without hesitation, taught them how to pray:
“When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we forgive everyone indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation.”

This prayer includes the essential elements of prayer, often summarized by the acronym ACTS:
– Adoration
– Contrition
– Thankfulness
– Supplication
Additionally, spiritual writers highlight six petitions in this prayer. Three of these are directed toward God:
1. That His name be glorified,
2. That His kingdom come,
3. That His will be done on earth.
The remaining three petitions address our needs:
1. Daily bread,
2. Forgiveness,
3. Deliverance from evil.
Reflecting on this, we can ask ourselves: How confident, consistent, and persistent are we in prayer?
