HOMILY FOR 28TH SATURDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY FOR 28TH SATURDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME : “THE ONE WHO BLASPHEMES AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL NOT BE FORGIVEN.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Eph 1:15-14; Psalm 8:2-7; Luke 12:8-12
In today’s first reading, it is God the Father who gives the Spirit, whose power is at work in us and who enables wisdom and perception, in order that we may come to full knowledge of God, in Christ Jesus. In this way, we become sharers of the life of the Son in his glory, while being under his dominion. All of this, as the gospel assures, depends on our fidelity and loyalty in maintaining a steady and enduring communion and friendship with Jesus in this world, bearing witness before a hostile and ungodly world to the fact he is Lord and King of all, and that in him we find and have life.

Jesus warns against lukewarmness and hardheartedness. Some Christians follow Jesus in hiding; not identifying with him in their words and actions. Failure to identify with Jesus is self-destructive, as one risks a reciprocal rejection by the Lord in heaven. Then, of course, those who outrightly reject Jesus and refuse to be open to the offer of God’s grace through the Holy Spirit are shut out of God’s blessing of life by virtue of their refusal to accept God’s grace. The Holy Spirit is the principle of communion between God and his people. To sin against the Holy Spirit is to reject the action, infusion, transformation, and accompaniment of the Holy Spirit in one’s life. Without the Holy Spirit, we have no access to grace. Christians are, therefore, urged to boldly identify with and proclaim Jesus even under the pain of death. When cornered by oppression, injustice and persecution, they are assured of the Holy Spirit’s assistance. On no account must we compromise our loyalty to Jesus, whose body we are as Church. That body is strengthened by the provision of the Lord and the love of members.
Lord, may your Spirit illuminate our path and lead us into full communion with you in this world, that we may be happy with you forever in the next. Amen.
