HOMILY FOR 28th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – YR. I

By: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

Homily Theme: “FOR MANY ARE CALLED, BUT FEW ARE CHOSEN”

This is the 28th Sunday in ordinary time.  In our  lives there are certain moments to celebrate one event or another.  The Bible  tells us  that, “there is time for everything.”  But, to celebrate an event needs preparation.  An unprepared event might not be well celebrated. When adequate preparations are made, the event becomes a success. Such is the case with us as the children of the Kingdom.  God has prepared a banquet for us in heaven. “On this mountain, the Lord of hosts will prepare for all people a banquet of rich food…” (Is.25:6-10). We need to be prepared before we enter the banquet hall.

The preparation we need is spiritual not material. This spiritual preparation requires holistic awareness of what we need to do to be at peace with God and our neighbor.  The preparation requires cleansing oneself from evil. It means relying on God for everything and believing that,  “there is nothing l cannot master with the help of the one who gives me strength” (Phil. 4:12-14ff). This total reliance on  God means wearing the correct wedding garment . It means that one is ready for God at any moment.

In the Gospel, the king who gave a feast for his son’s wedding is God. Those invited are all human beings.  But most people have failed to respond to God’s invitation to the wedding feast. Some also pay lip service to God. Those who love God and neighbor are putting on the right wedding garment. Every human being is a citizen of heaven. All of us are invited to enter into heaven but some reject heaven by their lack of love for God and neighbor.  Those who do not  love others are spotted by the king and flushed out of the banquet hall. “For many are called, but few are chosen”(Mtt. 22:1-14). Let us pray to appear before God dressed in love which is the  correct wedding garment,  amen.
