HOMILY FOR 28TH THURSDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: A MODEL OF FAITHFULNESS
BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa
Ephesians 1:1-10, Ps. 98:1-6, Luke 11:47-54
Today, we celebrate the memorial of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, a bishop and martyr who embodied the Gospel values of faith, courage, and selflessness. As we reflect on his life and legacy, may we be inspired to deepen our own commitment to Christ.

In our first reading (Ephesians 1:1–10), we hear of God’s eternal plan to adopt us as His children through Jesus Christ. Christ fulfills this divine plan by redeeming us through His blood. Ignatius, aware of this divine plan, willingly sacrificed his life for the sake of the Gospel.
In today’s gospel (Luke 11:47–54), Jesus denounces the Pharisees for their hypocrisy and failure to recognize God’s presence among them. Ignatius, unlike the Pharisees, recognized the power of Christ and faithfully proclaimed Him, even in the face of persecution.
As bishop of Antioch, Ignatius faced martyrdom with courage and joy. En route to Rome for his execution, he wrote letters to various churches, encouraging them to remain faithful. His famous phrase, “I desire to suffer for Christ’s sake,” echoes the sentiments of Paul in Philippians 1:21, “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
As we celebrate the memorial of Ignatius, let us renew our commitment to faithfulness, even in adversity; let us recognize the presence of Christ in our lives and proclaim Him boldly; let us imitate his selflessness, putting the needs of others before our own.
May Saint Ignatius of Antioch intercede for us. Amen.
