HOMILY FOR 28TH WEDNESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: JESUS TALKS TOUGH
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
Jesus was brutally honest with the scribes and Pharisees, addressing their hardened hearts, hypocrisy, and obsessive legalism. They meticulously observed the law of tithing, giving 10% of everything they acquired, including income, crops, herbs, mint, and rue (cf. Luke 11:42). Jesus did not condemn the act of tithing itself but challenged them to offer it freely and generously, rather than just out of obligation.

Legalism is dangerous for several reasons. It turns religion into a burden rather than a loving relationship with God, overlooks love and compassion—the core elements of faith—and fosters a false sense of righteousness and entitlement. In the early Church, legalism also caused division, as seen when some insisted that Gentiles must follow Jewish customs to be saved (Acts of the Apostles 15:1).
A German theologian wisely said, “In essentials, let there be unity; in non-essentials, let there be liberty; and in all things, let there be charity.” Are we so focused on legalism that we miss the true essence and spirit of the law?
