HOMILY FOR 29TH FRIDAY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: UNITY AND DISCERNMENT
BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa
Ephesians 4:1-6, Ps. 24:1-6, Luke 12:54-59
In our first reading today (Ephesians 4:1–6), St. Paul urges us to live a life worthy of our calling, striving for unity and humility. He reminds us that we are one body in Christ, with one Lord, one faith, and one baptism.

Our diversity is beautiful, but it should never divide us. Consider a church community where people from different ethnic backgrounds come together. Unity doesn’t mean erasing cultural differences but celebrating them while focusing on shared faith.
In our gospel text (Luke 12:54–59), Jesus cautions us to discern the signs of the times. He criticizes the crowds for recognizing weather patterns but failing to recognize God’s presence and action. Discernment involves quiet reflection, seeking guidance from Scripture and wise counsel, and recognizing God’s gentle whispers amidst the noise.
These readings remind us that unity is not uniformity. We come from different backgrounds and perspectives, but our shared faith unites us. For example, a parishioner volunteers at a food bank alongside people from different denominations, united in serving the poor. A family with differing opinions finds common ground through prayer and shared values.
They also tell us that discernment requires attention and awareness. A young adult seeks spiritual direction to discern their vocation and career path. A community prays together for wisdom in addressing social issues.
As we navigate our daily challenges, may we strive for unity, building bridges, not walls. May we cultivate discernment by recognizing God’s gentle whispers, embody humility by acknowledging our limitations, and seek wisdom by discerning God’s will. May our lives reflect the unity and discernment that Jesus calls us to. Amen.
