HOMILY FOR 29TH THURSDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: DIVISION AND FIRE
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
Jesus made a bold and shocking statement: “Do you think I have come to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” (Luke 12:51). Conflict and division are natural within families and communities, especially when embracing new values that clash with existing ones. When we adopt values rooted in truth and justice, we inevitably face opposition. Should we be troubled by this opposition? Not at all. We should be more concerned if everyone sings our praises without question. Genuine truth and righteousness often provoke resistance.

Jesus also declared, “I have come to bring fire to the earth.” This fire symbolizes the fire of the Holy Spirit and the light of grace. It is a fire that sets cold and lukewarm hearts ablaze; a fire that purifies and illuminates the darkness. It is the powerful fire of God’s word that burns with intensity (cf. Sirach 48:1; 1 Kings 18:38-39; Luke 24:32). As Francis Cardinal Arinze said, “You cannot inspire unless you are on fire.”
The Scripture warns those who are spiritually lukewarm, “Because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I am going to spit you out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:16). Is the fire of the Holy Spirit still burning in our hearts? Are we passionate about justice, truth, and love, or have we allowed our zeal to fade?
