HOMILY FOR 2ND WEDNESDAY OF EASTERTIDE: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: LEAVING THE SHADOWS
BY: Fr Deotacious Chikontwe SMA
Acts 5:17-26, John 3:16‐21
Today’s readings show us two very different scenes. In the first, we see the Apostles locked in a dark prison. In the second, Jesus talks about the world being filled with God’s bright light. The main message is simple: God wants us to be free and to live in the truth.
From Our First Reading
In the first reading from the Book of Acts, the religious leaders are angry and jealous because the Apostles are performing miracles. They throw the Apostles into jail to try and stop them. But during the night, an angel opens the doors and tells them, “Go back to the center of town and keep telling people about this new life.”
Think about that for a second. The Apostles didn’t run away and hide once they got out. They went right back to the most dangerous spot to share their message. Why? Because once you experience the joy of the Resurrection, you aren’t afraid of “locked doors”

From Our Gospel Reading
In the Gospel, we hear the famous words: “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.” Jesus tells us that he didn’t come to point fingers or punish us. He came to be a light.
Sometimes, we prefer the “darkness.” We hide our mistakes, we keep secrets, or we stay stuck in bad habits because it’s easier than changing. But Jesus invites us to step into the light. Living in the light just means being honest with God and ourselves. It means admitting, “I’m not perfect, but I’m moving toward the light.”
What Do We Learn Today?
• You can’t trap the Truth: People might try to stop us from doing the right thing, but God always provides a way forward.
• God is on your side: God sent Jesus because He loves us, not because He wants to catch us doing something wrong.
• Be Brave: Like the Apostles, we should be brave enough to show our faith, even when it feels a little scary or uncomfortable.
Conclusion
Don’t stay “locked up” in your fears or your past mistakes. The “prison doors” are open! Today, try to be a little more honest with God and a little more helpful to others. When we live in the light, we show the world that Jesus is truly alive.
